BETTER TO BE SAFE THAN SORRY

Francisco Colayco couldn't have said it better. One of the many lessons learned the hard way via the Ondoy experience, is the importance of insurance--property, chattel, travel, life, health (like the Blue Advantage) and so on and so forth. Here's an excerpt of his article:

Ondoy’s devastation should remind us to take a second look at the importance of insurance. Those who have family dependent on them should taking life insurance to somehow lessen the pain of their loss. Term insurance does not cost very much. Another is property insurance, specifically for our home, its contents and our cars.

For house insurance, the most common perils that you should cover are fire, typhoon, and earthquake.

Fire, in particular, can render one completely devastated because, most of the time, you can lose almost everything permanently including your memories (pictures and mementos). But the floods of Ondoy reminded us that floods can be just as devastating as fire. If you had insurance against typhoon, the losses you incurred with the floods would have been covered.

Whether or not you own your house, you can consider covering it with insurance. As always, you do not want to claim on insurance and it is difficult to spend on premium payments because you might feel that you are throwing away money for nothing. After all, you do not get any part of your premium payment back. These premium payments are one hundred percent expenses. However, if you can afford it, it is better to be protected.

If you don’t own your house, you can cover the contents of your house like furniture, equipment and personal effect. If you do own your house, you should be covered as well for the house itself.

Coverage means that if the items covered are damaged by the perils covered, the insurance company pays. While you do not really recover the real things that matter after a fire or typhoon or earthquake, at least the insurance payment will help you buy back some of it and replace to a great extent the physical assets damaged or lost.

Word of caution though, read the fine print in your insurance document to make sure you are really covered for what you want.

Car insurance has many types of coverage. The most common are for third party liability, theft, and own damage. Insurance coverage for the devastation type by Ondoy must specifically be defined in the policy acquired. As a minimum, it should cover the cost of restoring your car damaged by floods or typhoons.

Car accidents can be painful physically to the people involved. It also involves a lot of reporting, documentation with the police and other authorities. However, it becomes even more troublesome it you are not insured. If you own a car, insurance is one of the required costs of ownership.

Here's hoping we never have to wait for another catastrophe to implement Colayco's suggestions. Here's hoping too that all of you are safe and dry. May God have mercy on us all.

SAY HELLO TO HELLOW IDD!

SMART unveiled today, Hellow, the country’s first reloadable international direct dialing (IDD) card which can be used on any SMART or Talk ‘N Text celphone, to make calls for as low as P2.50 per minute to 17 key destinations where the most number of Filipinos may be found, via sachet-sized load denominations of as low as P15.

Unlike other IDD services, anyone may avail of the Hellow reloadable IDD card. One just needs to buy the Hellow card (SRP: P30), pre-loaded with P30, from any SMART Wireless Center and other accredited resellers all over the country.

Printed on the plastic card are the unique account number and PIN, and the Hellow user just needs to key-in these numbers when using any SMART or Talk ‘N Text handset from anywhere in the country. The per-minute charge is deducted from the Hellow account, and not from the SMART or Talk ‘N Text SIM in the handset.

The P30 load that comes with the Hellow reloadable IDD card may be used up to the last P2.50, and subsequent, sachet-sized load comes in denominations of as low as P15.

Hellow is the ultimate IDD service. No other service offers access and coverage through over 38.5 million handsets, since Hellow may be used on any SMART or Talk ‘N Text handset to make affordable, crystal-clear long-distance calls from anywhere in the country. No other service offers load ubiquity and affordability the way Hellow does -- there are about 1.3 million Smart Load retailers all over the country that also offer load for Hellow for as little as P15.

With Hellow, calls to Canada, mainland US, Guam, and Hawaii cost only P2.50 per minute. Calls to Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, China, Malaysia, and Hong Kong cost P5. For calls to Japan, Australia, UK, Italy, and Thailand, Hellow offers P8 per minute, while calls to Saudi Arabia and UAE cost P10.

To make a call using the Hellow reloadable IDD card, dial *4334 on a SMART or Talk ‘N Text handset, follow the instructions that will be given, then key in the account number and the PIN found on the card. To inquire about the load balance of a Hellow card, or to know the per-minute rate for calling a particular country, dial *4335.

M.O.A.

At work, I've done MOAs, and I've done MOAs. Lots of em. But this MOA, I will never get tired of...

THE ONE THAT GOT AWAY

Drat, I missed this...
The Lobby of The Peninsula Manila turned 33 last Sept. 14, and the halo halo harana, pancit luglog and schueblig became the center of the celebration. Now why did I not hear of this on radio, tv or bell tv any sooner?

How much did the halo halo harana, pancit luglog and schueblig cost back in 1976? All three items were priced at P33 each in 1976. On Sept. 14, the yummy trio sold at The Lobby for only P33 each.

THAT SECURITY ISH (NO MORE)

With the rising number of cases of internet fraud and identity theft, leading wireless services provider, Smart Communications, Inc. (SMART) now introduces the country’s first mobile-based internet security lock feature, which will allow SMART subscribers to perform safe and secure online purchases with the help of their cellphones.

Smart Money's expanded security feature enables an account holder to authorize online purchases made on his account via his Smart mobile phone. All online purchases via Smart Money will require the cardholder to input a Personal Identification Number (PIN) via his mobile phone to signify that an online purchase transaction has been authorized. This gives cardholders even more control over their Smart Money accounts, and protection from fraudulent online transactions. On top this, Smart Money accountholders are notified via SMS whenever transactions are made on their account.

Recent statistics show that the e-commerce industry in the Philippines has not completely taken off. Aside from the fact that Filipinos still prefer the physical experiences associated with shopping, comfort level with online transactions have yet to improve as well. According to the first-ever in-depth study on the internet habits of Filipinos conducted by Yahoo! and Nielsen in March 2009, only 3% of the total 20 million internet users in the Philippines, engage in online transactions.

SMART’s newest e-commerce innovation will allow Smart Money users to have access to over two million MasterCard retail partners found in the internet. To date, there are 25 million MasterCard partners all over the world.

Smart Money is the first reloadable payment card linked to a mobile phone with a SMART SIM. It combines the strength of SMART's mobile commerce services and MasterCard's wide merchant acceptance network, enabling consumers to enjoy an extensive array of goods and services. Smart Money cardholders can withdraw from over 7,000 bank ATM machines all over the country, perform peer-to-peer mobile money transfers and payments, pay utility bills, purchase prepaid load and finally, purchase from millions of MasterCard locations around the world, including online establishments.

The leader in wireless innovations, SMART has been at the forefront in promoting mobile commerce services in the Philippines since 2000. Smart Money, the world’s first electronic wallet card linked to a mobile phone, won the 2001 3GSM Award for “Most Innovative GSM Wireless Service for Customers”. It was also cited as the “Best Product Innovation” award at the MasterCard Marketing Awards in Australia.
